A person in Northern Ireland lost £250,000 after falling for an investment scam that began with an apparently AI-generated video featuring a well-known personality. Police described the fraud as sophisticated, warning that artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to make fake endorsements, voices and advertisements appear convincing.
How Did the AI Celebrity Scam Begin?
The victim saw what appeared to be an AI-generated video featuring a well-known personality from the financial sector. The advertisement promoted an investment opportunity and claimed significant returns.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland said an apparent celebrity endorsement should never be treated as proof that an investment is genuine.
Police did not confirm who the celebrity shown in the AI-generated video was. The scam was initially investigated after the victim responded to the investment advertisement.
The case highlights how artificial intelligence can add credibility to a familiar form of investment fraud. Instead of relying only on messages or fake websites, criminals can use fabricated videos, voices and apparent endorsements to make an offer appear more trustworthy.

How Did the Fraudsters Gain the Victim’s Trust?
The victim initially invested a relatively small amount. After that, the person was contacted through WhatsApp and encouraged to make further payments.
Police said criminals gradually gained the victim’s trust before encouraging increasingly significant payments.
This gradual approach can make the fraud harder to recognise. Rather than immediately demanding a very large sum, scammers may first persuade a victim to make a smaller payment and then continue building confidence in the supposed investment.
The PSNI said fraudsters could create extremely convincing advertisements, websites and communications. Artificial intelligence can also be used to fabricate videos, voices and apparent endorsements.
How Was £250,000 Taken?
Police said the fraudsters persuaded the victim to open accounts with multiple online platforms and gained remote access to the victim’s computer, claiming they were helping with the investment.
The victim was then encouraged to borrow money to continue investing. Funds were transferred to accounts controlled by the criminals.
By the time the fraud was discovered, the victim had lost £250,000.
The case shows how an investment scam can move beyond the original advertisement. Once contact is established, criminals may continue communicating directly with the victim, guide them through payments and attempt to gain greater control over their financial activity.
Why Are AI Celebrity Endorsements Dangerous?
AI-generated material can make fraudulent advertisements appear far more credible. A familiar face or voice can create the impression that a financial opportunity has been publicly endorsed by someone the victim recognises.
Police warned that artificial intelligence is being used to fabricate videos, voices and apparent endorsements. This means seeing or hearing a recognisable person apparently promoting an investment is no longer enough to establish that the offer is genuine.
An advertisement that looks professionally produced should also not automatically be trusted. Fraudsters can combine convincing videos with websites, WhatsApp conversations and other communications to build an apparently legitimate investment operation.
What Warning Signs Should People Watch For?
An unsolicited investment opportunity promising significant returns should be treated cautiously, particularly when it relies on a celebrity endorsement to establish credibility.
Requests to continue making larger payments after a small initial investment should also raise concern. In this case, the victim was encouraged to make further payments after first investing a relatively small amount.
Another serious warning sign is a request for remote access to a computer. The fraudsters in this case allegedly gained remote access while claiming they were assisting with the investment.
Pressure to borrow money to continue investing is another major danger sign. The victim was encouraged to borrow money before transferring funds to accounts controlled by the criminals.
How Can People Check Whether an Investment Is Genuine?
Police advised people to independently verify who they are dealing with and, where appropriate, check whether anyone offering financial services is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority.
Verification should be independent. A celebrity appearing in an advertisement should not be treated as confirmation that the person genuinely supports the investment.
People should also be cautious about trusting information supplied only through an advertisement, website or subsequent communications from those promoting the investment. The combination of professional-looking material and apparent celebrity involvement can still form part of a fraud.
How Can People Stay Safe From AI Investment Scams?
People should not trust an investment offer simply because a familiar celebrity appears in a video. AI can be used to create fake videos, voices and endorsements that look real. Always check an investment independently before sending money. Be especially careful if someone contacts you on WhatsApp, asks for larger payments, tells you to borrow money or requests remote access to your computer. If anything feels suspicious, stop the payment and verify the offer through official sources.
