Indian Police Service officer Nupur Prasad has been selected for the Medal for Meritorious Service, recognising a career that has included assignments with the Delhi Police, the Central Bureau of Investigation, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal.
A 2007-batch AGMUT cadre officer, Prasad recently completed her posting with the CBI and returned to the Delhi Police. She is currently serving as Joint Commissioner of Police in the Economic Offences Wing, where she handles matters related to financial crime.
The national honour recognises police officers for distinguished work in areas including criminal investigation, law and order, public service, crime prevention and administration.
CBI Tenure Included Sushant Singh Rajput Case
Prasad drew nationwide attention after taking charge of the CBI investigation into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14, 2020.
The case was transferred to the CBI in August 2020 following complaints from the actor’s family and disputes over jurisdiction. During the investigation, Prasad supervised key aspects of the probe, including forensic examination, medical records and witness interviews.
The agency completed its investigation in 2025 by filing final closure reports. According to the information in the screenshots, investigators found no evidence of foul play, abetment to suicide or criminal conspiracy.
Her CBI tenure also included other high-profile investigations. Reports cited in the article linked her supervisory role to financial fraud probes involving businessman Vijay Mallya and the AgustaWestland helicopter deal.
Key Leadership Roles in Delhi Police
Earlier in her career, Prasad held several significant positions in the Delhi Police. She served as the first Deputy Commissioner of Police for Shahdara and helped establish the district’s administrative framework after it was formed.
While heading Shahdara district, she led police action against illegal gambling dens and drug networks and set up local crime-prevention units aimed at improving safety for residents.
She later served as Deputy Commissioner of Police for North Delhi, where she managed security arrangements for major public events, including Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort and Delhi University elections.
Returns to Delhi Police as Joint Commissioner
After completing her central deputation, Prasad returned to the Delhi Police and assumed her current role as Joint Commissioner in the Economic Offences Wing.
Her present responsibilities focus on financial crime cases, adding to a career that has included criminal investigations, district policing, public-order management and assignments with the CBI.
