Ten people, including the deputy mukhiya of Hussainabad panchayat in Deoghar district, have been arrested for allegedly posing as police personnel and robbing the homes of people accused in cyber fraud cases. Police said the gang targeted such households while wearing uniforms and claiming to be from the cyber police station.
Gang Allegedly Posed as Cyber Police
The accused were identified as Farukh Ansari, deputy mukhiya, Mohammad Mubarak Ansari alias Guddu, Altaf Ansari alias Guddu, Izrail Ansari, Tahir Ansari, Shahbaz Ansari, Pandey Yadav, Bablu Ansari, Suleman Sah and Akram Sah.
SDPO Kuldeep Kumar said the gang allegedly approached the homes of people accused in cyber fraud cases while dressed in police uniforms. Once the occupants opened the door, the accused reportedly held them hostage at gunpoint and took away cash and valuables.
Police said many victims hesitated to report the incidents because they feared legal action over their own alleged involvement in cybercrime cases.
Arrests Made From Abandoned Building
The suspects were arrested from an abandoned building at Rahini More under Deoghar police station limits while they were allegedly planning further criminal activity, according to Jasidih police station officer-in-charge Deepak Kumar.
Farukh Ansari was wanted in a kidnapping case. All ten accused were sent to judicial custody after their arrest.
A case has been registered under provisions relating to robbery, the Arms Act and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Weapons and Police Clothing Seized
Preliminary investigation indicated that the gang was active in areas under Jasidih, Devipur, Margomunda, Sarath, Madhupur, Sonaraytharhi and Pathrol police stations in Deoghar district.
Police are also investigating possible links to similar offences reported in Dumka and other districts.
A country-made pistol, four live cartridges, a pistol magazine, five police T-shirts, five pairs of trousers, five caps, four plastic batons and two motorcycles were seized from the accused.
