Police in Haryana’s Faridabad have arrested five people, including a married couple, in connection with an alleged marriage fraud case in which the complainant claimed he was cheated of ₹40,000 on the false promise of arranging his marriage. The case was registered following a complaint filed by Rajkumar Panchal alias Bittu Bajrangi.
According to police, the arrested accused have been identified as Danish Chaman (35), Mahvish Danish (27), Sachin (27) and Sanjeev (52), all residents of Aligarh, along with Pradeep (34) from Bulandshahr. Police are continuing raids to trace the alleged mastermind, Rani, who remains absconding.
According to the complaint, the victim had approached his acquaintance Avinash alias Bunty for help in finding a suitable bride. Bunty allegedly introduced him to a marriage broker named Rani, who reportedly invited him to Aligarh several times to meet prospective brides. During this process, he was shown the photograph of a woman who was later identified as Mahvish Danish.
Police said that after the complainant approved the photograph, Mahvish and the other accused visited his residence in September 2025. She allegedly introduced herself as Pradeep’s sister, while Sanjeev was presented as her uncle, Sachin as the marriage broker and Danish as her brother. The accused allegedly collected ₹11,000 during a ceremonial engagement ritual and later took another ₹30,000 in the name of wedding arrangements.
According to the allegations, the marriage ceremony was scheduled to take place at a temple in Aligarh on September 7, 2025. However, none of the accused appeared at the venue on the appointed day. Realising that he had allegedly been cheated, the complainant approached the police and lodged a complaint.
The investigation has further revealed that Mahvish Danish had previously been jailed twice in similar alleged marriage fraud cases. Police also said that Pradeep has a criminal history involving alleged fraud and has previously served time in Aligarh and Dasna jails. Investigators are questioning the arrested accused to determine whether the group targeted other victims using the same modus operandi.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and efforts are continuing to arrest the absconding mastermind. Authorities have advised the public to independently verify the identity, family background and documents of prospective marriage partners before making any financial payments and to exercise caution while dealing with marriage brokers or intermediaries.
