Chandigarh ASI Arrested for Allegedly Seeking Money to Drop Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Chandigarh Police posted at Sector-39 Police Station in a bribery case involving an alleged demand for money in connection with a road accident inquiry.

According to officials, the CBI registered the case on June 6 following a complaint alleging that the ASI had demanded a bribe of ₹50,000 from the complainant. The money was allegedly sought for releasing the complainant’s vehicle and for not registering a criminal case against him in relation to a road accident matter under investigation.

Complaint Leads to CBI Action

The agency said the complaint accused the police official of seeking illegal gratification in exchange for extending official favours. Following receipt of the complaint, the CBI registered an instant case against the accused ASI and initiated an investigation.

Officials stated that during subsequent interactions, the accused allegedly agreed to accept a reduced amount of ₹40,000 from the complainant after negotiations.

ASI Caught During Trap Operation

The CBI conducted a trap operation on June 6 and allegedly caught the ASI while accepting ₹40,000 from the complainant. The agency said the accused was apprehended red-handed while receiving the money.

Investigators have launched further inquiries into the matter, and searches are being carried out at premises linked to the accused police official.

Further Investigation Underway

The arrested ASI is scheduled to be produced before the competent court in Chandigarh. The CBI said the investigation remains ongoing and additional evidence is being examined.

The agency also noted that searches connected to the case are continuing. Officials said further investigation is underway to establish all aspects of the alleged bribery transaction and any related circumstances.
