The Crime Branch Kashmir’s Cyber Crime Investigation Centre for Excellence (CICE) has recovered more than Rs 22 lakh in cyber fraud cases over the past three months.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, CICE Ashiq Hussain Malik said this highlights both the scale of online scams and the growing efforts to counter them. Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, Malik said a significant amount of defrauded money has been successfully put on hold and is in the process of being returned to victims.
Evolving Scams Target All Age Groups
However, he cautioned that large sums are still being lost due to lack of vigilance among the public. He noted that cyber fraudsters continue to evolve their methods, targeting people across age groups with fake job offers, lottery schemes, investment traps, and impersonation calls. “Whenever an offer looks too attractive, it should raise suspicion. Verification is essential before making any financial transaction,” he said.
Malik stressed that fraudsters are increasingly exploiting emerging technologies, including AI-based voice and video cloning, to deceive victims. He urged people to cross-check any suspicious request for money, even if it appears to come from a known contact.
Digital Arrest Scam Lacks Legal Basis
Highlighting the concept of “digital arrest” as a scam, he clarified that no such legal provision exists and warned citizens, particularly the elderly, against falling prey to such intimidation tactics. The officer also advised victims of financial cyber fraud to immediately contact the national helpline 1930 or report incidents on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal to prevent further loss.
Prompt reporting, he said, can help authorities freeze fraudulent transactions in real time. Reiterating the importance of awareness, Malik urged the public to remain cautious, avoid sharing sensitive information, and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies to curb the rising menace of cybercrime.
