In a shocking case of alleged custodial misconduct, a police officer in Maharashtra’s Akola district has been suspended and arrested after being accused of demanding sexual favours from a woman held in a police lockup. The incident has raised serious concerns about abuse of authority and the safety of detainees.
The accused, identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajesh Jadhav, was posted at the Civil Lines police station. The woman was in custody in connection with an ₹80 lakh fraud case when the alleged incident took place.
Allegations of exploitation inside police custody
According to the complaint, the officer allegedly made inappropriate advances and attempted to exploit the woman’s vulnerable position while she was in custody. He is accused of offering to “help” her in the case in exchange for sexual favours.
The situation escalated further when the officer allegedly made objectionable remarks about the woman’s daughter, reportedly saying she should send her to him in return for ₹10,000 and assistance in the case.
The woman later reported the incident to another officer, triggering immediate internal action.

Video evidence and departmental action
The case gained wider attention after a video surfaced showing a senior police officer confronting and reprimanding the accused over his conduct. The footage quickly circulated, intensifying public outrage and prompting swift disciplinary measures.
Following the complaint, senior officials ordered the immediate suspension of the officer for misconduct and for tarnishing the image of the police force.
Arrest and ongoing investigation
After the allegations surfaced, the accused initially went absconding but was later apprehended by police teams. Authorities have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the matter.
Officials are now examining statements, digital evidence, and other records to determine the full extent of misconduct and whether any additional violations occurred.
Larger concerns over custodial safety
The incident has once again highlighted concerns about custodial safety, particularly for women detainees, and the need for stricter oversight within law enforcement.
Experts emphasise that individuals in custody are in a position of extreme vulnerability, and any misuse of power by officials constitutes a serious violation of legal and ethical standards.
Authorities have reiterated that strict action will be taken and that accountability mechanisms will be strengthened to prevent such incidents in the future.
