Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani did not appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday for questioning in an alleged money laundering case linked to Yes Bank. The agency had summoned him for recording his statement, but Ambani failed to attend the scheduled appearance. It is not yet clear whether the investigating agency has issued a fresh summons. Further action will depend on the progress of the investigation.
RCOM Loan Fraud Investigation
Sources said the 66-year-old businessman was also supposed to be questioned in connection with an alleged bank loan fraud case related to Reliance Communications (RCOM). He had earlier been questioned for nearly nine hours on Thursday, during which investigators reportedly asked him about financial transactions and suspected irregularities in bank borrowing cases. Ambani was first questioned by the ED in August 2025 as part of the ongoing probe.
Multiple ADAG Entities Under Scrutiny
The investigation is not limited to a single company, as multiple entities linked to the Anil Ambani Group are under scrutiny. Authorities are examining allegations that financial irregularities and misrepresentation of information may have occurred during the process of securing bank loans. In this context, the ED recently formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) following directions from the Supreme Court to conduct a comprehensive probe into all related cases.
Abode Property Attachment
The agency also took action under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act by attaching Anil Ambani’s Mumbai residence ‘Abode’ on Wednesday. According to the ED’s report, the property is valued at approximately ₹3,716 crore and was attached in connection with money laundering allegations. The ED informed the Supreme Court that three separate money laundering cases have been registered against the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG).
CBI Case and Tina Ambani Summons
In a related development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also registered a fresh case against RCom and Anil Ambani. The allegation is that between 2013 and 2017, the Bank of Baroda suffered a loss of nearly ₹2,220 crore due to alleged cheating. Investigators claim that misleading financial disclosures and other irregular information were submitted to obtain loans. Search operations were also conducted at Ambani’s residence and RCom offices.
Anil Ambani’s wife, Tina Ambani, was also called for questioning but sought an adjournment. Officials said she may be issued a fresh summons later. Her role in the matter is also under investigation.
Ongoing Financial Network Probe
Investigating officials said all three money laundering cases are being examined in depth. The Special Investigation Team is trying to determine the stages at which irregularities may have occurred in the loan acquisition process and identify individuals involved.
Both the ED and CBI are attempting to establish forward and backward links in the alleged financial irregularity network. Officials said the primary objective of the probe is not limited to a few individuals but aims to uncover a potentially larger financial ecosystem.
Further questioning and legal action related to the case will be decided based on investigation reports. Authorities have said that the probe is being conducted transparently and action will be taken based on new evidence if required.
