A specialized webinar on “Investigation of App-Based Spoof Calls and VoIP Communications: Technology, Process and Legal Challenges” is being conducted by the Centre for Police Technology, jointly with Prof. Triveni Singh, Ex-IPS and Chief Mentor, Future Crime Research Foundation. The session will be led by Prof. Singh along with two domain experts, and is scheduled to be held on 6th February from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM.

The webinar is being organized in response to the rapid rise in cyber-enabled crimes involving app-based spoof calls and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) platforms. It is strictly restricted to Police personnel, Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), Paramilitary Forces and Defence Forces, with the objective of strengthening investigative capabilities against telecom and internet-based frauds. Participation is allowed only through prior registration, which is mandatory.

The session will focus on how spoof calls and VoIP-based communications are misused for cyber fraud, impersonation, extortion and financial crimes, and why it is critical for investigators to understand the underlying technology. Experts will explain the basic architecture of VoIP platforms, including call routing, masking techniques and the role of international gateways.

A major segment of the webinar will address the techno-legal challenges faced during investigation, particularly in cases involving cross-border digital infrastructure. Topics will include procedures for seeking data from Internet Service Providers (ISPs), VoIP service providers and international gateways, along with discussion on legal processes, jurisdictional challenges and admissibility of electronic evidence.

Experienced speakers will demonstrate investigation pathways, providing practical insights into tracing calls, coordination with service providers and overcoming investigative bottlenecks. The webinar will be conducted on the Zoom platform.
