The Gurugram Police have arrested two Nigerian nationals on charges of cyber extortion and online fraud for allegedly posing as fake company directors and defrauding employees of a firm in the district, officials said. The arrests follow a technical cybercrime investigation that traced suspicious mobile communications and uncovered fraudulent money transfers believed to be linked to the suspects.

How the Cyber Fraud Was Carried Out

According to the Cyber Crime East Police Station, information was received on January 31, 2026, about a suspicious mobile number that was linked to possible fraud activity. Technical analysis of the number helped investigators track the individuals to Nathupur village in Gurugram, where they were taken into custody.

The arrested men were identified as Ojo Uyiosa and James, both Nigerian nationals. Police said the duo had allegedly posed as directors of a company to gain the trust of employees and then pressured them into transferring funds. The total amount defrauded was estimated to be around ₹10 lakh, which victims were instructed to transfer into a Bandhan Bank account that had already been the subject of two prior cyber fraud complaints.

During the arrest operation, officers recovered two mobile phones and three SIM cards from the suspects, which are now being examined for evidence of further criminal activity and possible accomplices.

Background and Visa Details of the Accused

In their initial questioning, **Ojo Uyiosa disclosed that he first came to India on a student visa in 2014, while **James entered the country on a tourist visa in 2023, according to a Gurugram police spokesperson. The manner in which the suspects obtained and used mobile numbers and SIM cards to communicate with victims is under detailed investigation.

Both accused were produced before a local city court, which granted the police three days of remand to question them further and continue the probe into whether other individuals or a broader network were involved.

Police Probe into Cyber Fraud and Money Trail

Investigators have indicated that the case could be connected to a network of similar complaints involving fake corporate identities and targeted financial extortion. The use of impersonation — especially of corporate officials — to deceive employees into making money transfers is a reported cybercrime tactic that law enforcement agencies have been tracking across multiple Indian states.

The Bandhan Bank account used to receive funds from the victims has already been linked to earlier cyber fraud cases, suggesting that the suspects may not have acted alone and that other accomplices or fronts could exist. Police are continuing account analysis and digital tracing to understand the full scope of the operation.

Authorities are also examining whether the incident is part of a wider pattern of foreign nationals being involved in fraud schemes in India, a concern underscored by past cases where Nigerian nationals were arrested for similar cybercrime activities.

Police Advisory and Next Steps

Senior officials have emphasised that such cyber fraud cases — where fraudsters impersonate company representatives to mislead employees — are increasingly common and rely heavily on digital deception and social engineering. Citizens and corporate employees are urged to verify the authenticity of communication, email addresses, and requests for urgent financial transfers, especially when they originate from unfamiliar numbers or unverifiable sources.

The police continue to investigate the duo’s connections, financial transactions, and communications to determine whether this case is linked with a larger cybercrime syndicate.
