NHAI Ends KYV Process for New FASTags from February 1, 2026: Big Relief for Car Owners

In a major relief for millions of vehicle owners across the country, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to discontinue the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for issuing new FASTags from February 1, 2026. The move will apply specifically to private vehicles, including cars, jeeps and vans.

According to NHAI, the decision aims to eliminate unnecessary inconvenience, delays and repeated verification faced by vehicle owners after FASTag activation. Even with valid documents, many users had earlier experienced tag suspension or repeated KYV checks—an issue that will now largely be resolved.

What Was KYV and Why Did It Cause Problems

Until now, KYV was a compulsory verification process for FASTag users to ensure that the tag was affixed to the same vehicle for which it was issued. Under this process, vehicle owners were required to upload:

  • Registration Certificate (RC)
  • Photographs of the vehicle
  • Other related details

The KYV process had to be repeated every three years to keep the FASTag active. In practice, however, this often became a source of avoidable hardship for genuine private vehicle owners, despite complete and valid documentation.

What NHAI Has Clarified

NHAI has stated that following the new decision:

  • New FASTags for private vehicles will not require KYV
  • Existing FASTags for cars will also no longer need periodic KYV, unless a specific issue or complaint arises

However, KYV may still be required in exceptional cases, such as:

  • Use of a FASTag on an incorrect vehicle
  • Complaints related to fraud or misuse
  • Suspected misuse of car FASTag by commercial vehicles

Pre-Activation Verification to Be Strengthened via VAHAN Portal

Along with removing KYV, NHAI has strengthened the pre-activation verification process for banks and agencies issuing FASTags. This verification will now be carried out through the VAHAN Portal, the government’s central vehicle database.

Before issuing a FASTag, vehicle details will be verified directly from the VAHAN database, ensuring that:

  • FASTags are not issued to fake or invalid vehicles
  • Clear distinction is maintained between private and commercial vehicles
  • The need for repeated post-activation checks like KYV is eliminated

NHAI said this step will make the FASTag system more transparent, simpler and user-friendly.

How Vehicle Owners Will Benefit

Private vehicle owners are expected to gain multiple advantages from this decision:

  • No repeated verification after FASTag activation
  • Reduced risk of tag suspension despite valid documents
  • Smoother and uninterrupted passage at toll plazas
  • Greater trust in a simplified digital process

Experts believe the move will make the FASTag ecosystem less contentious and more reliable for everyday users.

An Important Step Towards Seamless Digital Tolling

FASTag is considered the backbone of India’s digital tolling infrastructure. Removing KYV and reinforcing VAHAN-based verification is seen as a significant step towards ease of mobility and hassle-free highway travel.

According to NHAI, robust backend verification through technology will not only curb misuse, but also spare genuine vehicle owners from unnecessary procedures.

What Happens Next

With the decision coming into effect from February 1, 2026, NHAI and FASTag-issuing banks will implement the required technical changes in the issuance process. For private vehicle owners, this reform is expected to deliver much-needed digital relief in the new year.
