New Delhi: The United States has expanded the scope of online presence reviews for H-1B and H-4 visa applicants worldwide, tightening scrutiny of digital footprints as part of its visa vetting process. According to the United States Department of State, the enhanced screening has been effective since December 15 and will apply to applicants of all nationalities under standard visa verification procedures.
The State Department said the move is aimed at curbing misuse of the H-1B programme, while continuing to allow US companies to recruit highly skilled foreign professionals. It clarified that US embassies and consulates across the globe will continue to accept and process H-1B and H-4 non-immigrant visa applications.
What has changed under the new review
Under the revised framework, applicants’ digital presence—including publicly available online profiles and activities—will be examined more comprehensively. Officials said the review forms part of routine security and background checks, intended to flag any inconsistencies or red flags in an applicant’s profile. The department has, however, indicated that the additional scrutiny could extend processing timelines in some cases.
Advice for applicants
The State Department has advised applicants to apply early and factor in additional processing time. While embassies and consulates will continue scheduling appointments and adjudicating cases, the revised norms may lead to supplementary administrative processing for certain applications.
