Jamshedpur’s New SIM Block Cyber Scam Targets Residents

Jamshedpur police have issued urgent warnings about a sophisticated cyber fraud where scammers call victims claiming their SIM card will be blocked within hours due to “KYC issues” or “registration problems.” The automated or recorded calls instruct users to click an SMS link for “verification,” leading to phishing sites that steal OTPs, banking details, and personal information.

How the Scam Unfolds

Fraudsters use computer-generated voices mimicking telecom executives from Airtel, Jio, or Vodafone Idea. Victims receive an SMS with a malicious link shortly after the call. Clicking it opens a fake portal demanding Aadhaar, PAN, or bank credentials. Once entered, scammers hijack the SIM, link it to victim accounts, and drain funds via unauthorized UPI or net banking transactions.

This tactic exploits panic over SIM deactivation under TRAI rules, with calls peaking evenings when people are home. Jharkhand cyber police note over 197 fraudster numbers active, using 1,432 SIMs sourced from Bengal and Chhattisgarh networks.

Real Dangers and Police Action

Losses range from ₹10,000 to lakhs as hackers reset banking passwords instantly. Eastern Singhbhum police urge blocking suspicious numbers and reporting via 1930 helpline. They’ve identified interstate gangs using VoIP for untraceable calls.

Stay Safe: Key Precautions

  • Ignore “SIM block” calls; verify directly via official app or *121#.
  • Never click unsolicited links or share OTPs.
  • Report immediately to cybercrime.gov.in; enable banking alerts.
