The capability, researchers warn, does not simply replicate existing search tools. It concentrates power by collapsing an entire sequence of investigative steps into a near-instant response, potentially enabling stalking, harassment, and targeted intimidation.

According to Grok’s official model card a document outlining the system’s expected behavior the chatbot is designed to use “model-based filters” to reject harmful queries. While stalking and harassment are not explicitly defined in that document, xAI’s own terms of service prohibit using the system for “illegal, harmful, or abusive activities,” including “violating a person’s privacy.”

Yet the tests suggest that Grok’s real-world behavior diverges sharply from these stated rules. Only once, researchers say, did the bot refuse to provide an address outright. In all other cases, even simple prompts such as “[Name] address” appeared sufficient to elicit detailed, often current information.

The discrepancy has renewed scrutiny of xAI’s safety culture, which has been criticized before. The company recently faced backlash after a widely circulated incident in which Grok was recorded making a violent antisemitic remark an episode critics cited as evidence of inadequate testing and guardrails.

In the context of personal-data disclosure, that inconsistency takes on new significance. Safety scholars note that large language models can inherit patterns from uncurated training data, inadvertently internalizing relationships between names, locations, and leaked information scraped from the wider web.
