Ahmedabad, 30 November 2025 — The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court in Ahmedabad on Friday sentenced Mahendra A. Loonker, former Senior Deputy Manager of Oriental Insurance Company, Rajkot, to three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs. 1 lakh for accepting a bribe.
The case was registered by the CBI on 11 July 2012. It was alleged that Loonker abused his official position by demanding and accepting Rs. 15,000 from a private company partner to approve an accident insurance claim filed for the injury of one of the company’s employees.
Investigation and Arrest
Following the complaint, the CBI arrested the accused on the same day, 11 July 2012, and conducted searches at both his residence and office. The investigation revealed that the accused had exploited his position for personal gain.
After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet on 3 December 2012, charging Loonker with demanding and accepting illegal gratification and criminal misconduct as a public servant. A CBI official said the case highlighted the severity of corruption and misconduct by a government employee against the interests of citizens.
Court Proceedings and Verdict
The special court, after hearing detailed arguments, concluded that Loonker had misused his authority for personal benefit in violation of regulations. The court imposed three years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 1 lakh. It was also ordered that failure to pay the fine would result in additional imprisonment. A senior legal expert commented,
“This verdict sends a strong message about integrity in public service and the consequences of corruption. It serves as a warning that misuse of official position will have serious repercussions.”
Future Monitoring and Enforcement
The CBI stated that strict legal action will continue against corruption and misconduct by public officials. The agency will monitor compliance and ensure officials remain accountable to maintain public trust. The verdict clearly establishes that accepting illegal benefits or violating official duties is a criminal offence, and the judicial system is fully equipped to handle such cases.
