Shahdara Village, Noida- A devastating cyberfraud has left a Noida shop owner financially crippled just weeks before his daughter’s wedding. Cybercriminals hacked his mobile phone and drained Rs 44 lakh—savings he had painstakingly accumulated for his third daughter’s upcoming nuptials.

The Incident: When Savings Vanished Overnight

The victim, a small plastic goods shop owner, had recently deposited the money in the Bank of India’s Bhangel branch. The funds were proceeds from selling three bighas of land in Bulandshahr. Two of his five daughters are already married, and preparations for the next wedding were underway.

The shocking discovery came on August 22, when he tried to withdraw part of his savings. Bank staff informed him that his account had been emptied through online transactions conducted between August 8 and 14.

“I had more than Rs 44 lakh at the beginning of the month. We never shared our bank details with anyone. Yet, everything is gone,” the victim said, visibly distressed.

How the Cyber Heist Unfolded

Investigators revealed the man’s phone was compromised on August 8. Data was wiped, and SMS alerts temporarily disabled. Authorities believe the criminals diverted SMS notifications to another number, ensuring the victim remained unaware of the fraudulent transfers.

The stolen funds were moved via more than 20 net banking transactions, likely routed through “rented accounts”—bank accounts of unemployed youth and daily wage earners used by fraudsters to launder money quickly.

Official Response & Investigation

A complaint has been lodged on the NCRP portal, and the Cyber Crime Police Station registered a case against unidentified suspects. Officials are tracing digital footprints to recover the stolen funds, though such recovery remains challenging.

A senior cybercrime official warned:

“People must treat their phones and banking credentials with the same security as physical cash. Hackers can bypass traditional security systems, including SMS alerts.”

Authorities recommend:

  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on all banking apps.
  • Keep devices updated with the latest security patches.
  • Monitor account activity regularly.
  • Avoid sharing sensitive banking information with anyone.

The Emotional and Financial Toll

Beyond the monetary loss, the psychological impact on the victim is significant. Years of savings, intended for a family celebration, vanished in days, leaving the family in distress. Experts emphasize that cyberfrauds not only deplete finances but also cause long-lasting emotional strain.

The Bigger Picture: Rising Cybercrime in India

As India rapidly embraces digital banking, cyberattacks targeting ordinary citizens are increasing. Experts note that mobile-based fraud is becoming highly sophisticated, exploiting gaps in personal security and banking protocols.

This case serves as a stark reminder: vigilance, cybersecurity awareness, and preventive measures are crucial to protect personal finances from sophisticated fraudsters.
