A group of insurance companies and their third-party administrator, Landmark Admin, have agreed to a $6 million (₹50.1 crore) class action settlement following a 2024 data breach that exposed sensitive personal and financial data of policyholders.
The affected companies include American Benefit Life Insurance Company, Liberty Bankers Life Insurance Company, Accendo Insurance Company, Capitol Life Insurance Company, Continental Mutual Insurance Company, and American Monumental Life Insurance Company.
The breach, which took place between May 13 and June 17, 2024, compromised sensitive customer data such as names, Social Security numbers, financial account details, and health insurance information.
Cybersecurity Failures at the Center of the Lawsuit
According to the class action lawsuit filed in the District Court for Dallas County, Texas, plaintiffs alleged that Landmark Admin and the associated insurers failed to implement adequate cybersecurity measures to protect consumer data.
The lawsuit claimed that these entities could have prevented the cyberattack by using stronger safeguards and modern data protection protocols.
Although the defendants denied any wrongdoing, they agreed to the $6 million settlement to resolve the claims and avoid further litigation.

- A $30 flat cash payment for those without documented losses.
Payments may be adjusted on a pro rata basis depending on the total number of valid claims filed.
Claimants must submit proof of loss — such as bank statements, police reports, or credit monitoring documentation — to qualify for reimbursement.

Landmark’s Response and Industry Implications
While Landmark Admin has not admitted liability, the settlement reflects a growing legal trend in holding data handlers accountable for cybersecurity negligence.
Experts say such settlements emphasize the importance of stronger data protection across the insurance and financial industries, where sensitive information is a prime target for cybercriminals.
The incident serves as a reminder for companies to adopt proactive cyber defenses to safeguard customer trust and regulatory compliance.
