Modus Operandi: Romance and Deception

Investigators revealed that Stephane initiated contact with women on the app, cultivating trust by presenting himself as a successful businessman. He later claimed to be detained at Mumbai airport due to missing medical documents. Accomplices, impersonating customs officials, demanded money for his “release,” leading victims to transfer funds via UPI.

Investigation and Arrest

The arrest followed a complaint from a woman named Anjali, who reported being cheated of ₹48,500. Police traced the accused through digital footprints, including call records and financial transactions. He was apprehended in Tilak Nagar, West Delhi, where he was residing illegally after overstaying his tourist visa.

Scale of the Scam

Authorities confirmed that Stephane had targeted women across various states, with victims reporting losses ranging from a few thousand to several lakhs. The investigation is ongoing to identify accomplices and recover the defrauded amounts.

Public Awareness Urged

Police have urged citizens to exercise caution when interacting with strangers online, especially on dating and language exchange platforms. They advise users to be skeptical of urgent financial requests and to report suspicious activities to the cybercrime cell promptly.
