The Scam That Turned Deadly
The doctor was first targeted through WhatsApp calls by fraudsters posing as police officials. Brandishing forged documents and fabricated FIRs, they accused her of being linked to a criminal case. To avoid arrest, she was coerced into a “digital arrest” — forced to remain on continuous video calls under surveillance — and pressured to transfer ₹6.60 lakh from her pension account.
Psychological Torture and Collapse
Family members revealed that the doctor grew increasingly distressed as the ordeal continued. Constant intimidation, combined with the loss of her savings, left her devastated. Despite attempts by her loved ones to intervene, the psychological weight of the scam proved fatal.
Police Crackdown and Arrests
Hyderabad Cybercrime Police tracked the money trail and digital footprints, leading to the arrest of two suspects. Officials say the accused were part of a wider fraud network targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly senior citizens, across multiple states. “This was not just financial fraud — it was a crime that cost a life,” said a senior officer.
A Growing National Threat
Cybercrime experts warn that “digital arrest” scams are rapidly spreading across India. Professor Triveni Singh, cybercrime specialist, said: “Scammers weaponize fear using forged IDs and fake police authority. Unless we massively scale awareness and real-time monitoring, such tragedies will only increase.”
Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant, verify suspicious calls, and immediately report threats of arrest to cybercrime helplines.
The Hyderabad case is more than a financial fraud — it is a chilling reminder that cybercrime can destroy lives. Stronger safeguards, awareness, and swift enforcement are essential to prevent more such tragedies.
