Mumbai Police’s West Cyber Cell has arrested two men who helped scam a 79-year-old Powai doctor out of ₹25 lakh. The doctor, living in Hiranandani and running a private firm, received a WhatsApp message in mid-July. The promotion promised quick returns from share trading. Soon after, he was added to a WhatsApp group that regularly showed “huge profits” through posts and screenshots.
The story sounded genuine. A few days later, the group admin called the doctor directly and insisted he invest in specific stocks. The hope of big earnings convinced the doctor, who was then guided to share personal documents and set up a virtual trading account in his name.
Steps Involved in the Fraud
The scheme was well-planned. The elderly victim deposited ₹25 lakh over seven days. Each step looked real, as the trading platform showed climbing profits after every trade. Because the numbers looked so encouraging, the doctor trusted the process.
However, trouble started when he tried to withdraw his money. The group pressured him to “pay more” to get access to his funds. When the doctor finally refused, the scammers blocked him on WhatsApp. His virtual account vanished, making it clear he had been the target of a scam.

Quick Police Action
Upset by the loss, the doctor filed a complaint at the Cyber Police Station. The police moved fast. By looking at transaction details, they tracked the scammers’ bank accounts. The names Richard Rao and Prashant Chaudhary came up during the probe. Both men provided their accounts to the main scammer, helping move the stolen funds.
On Sunday, officers arrested both men in Dombivli. Investigations are still underway. Police are now trying to identify the mastermind and any more people linked to similar crimes.
Stay Alert Against Digital Scams
This case is a clear warning. Police advise everyone to be very careful about investment offers that arrive through WhatsApp or other social media. Never trust groups that promise easy money. Always verify trading platforms and offers directly with official bodies. If something seems suspicious, report it to cyber police immediately.
Mumbai Police continue urging all citizens, especially senior professionals, to stay vigilant and protect themselves from fast-growing online fraud in India.
