Greater Noida: Sharda University has once again come under the spotlight after the suicide of a B.Tech student, just months after a similar tragedy involving a dental student. The case has reignited concerns about accountability, communication gaps, and student welfare at one of Greater Noida’s prominent institutions.

The deceased, identified as Shivam Day, was a native of Madhubani, Bihar. According to police, Shivam had not attended classes for nearly a year and a half, though he continued living in a private hostel. On Tuesday, he was found hanging in his room. In a suicide note recovered from the scene, Shivam took full responsibility for his actions and requested that no one be held accountable. He also urged the university to refund his fees to his family.

His family, however, has leveled serious accusations against the university administration. Shivam’s father alleged that the university failed to notify them about his prolonged absence from classes, while continuing to collect tuition fees. “If we had been informed earlier, perhaps we could have intervened,” he said. The family has demanded accountability, suggesting that negligence by the institution contributed to their son’s death.

The university administration has denied these claims. Ajit Kumar, Director (PR), stated that Shivam’s absence was communicated to the family through email. He added that the institution never demanded fees, which were deposited voluntarily by the family each semester. Kumar assured that approximately ₹2 lakh in excess fees would be refunded within days.

Police are investigating the case, using the suicide note as key evidence. Yet, the incident has sparked broader debates about whether universities are doing enough to monitor student well-being and maintain transparent communication with families a question that lingers as Sharda faces its second student suicide in recent months.
