Gaya/Mohania: Police have arrested three men in connection with the robbery of gold worth approximately 2.92 crore rupees from an employee of a Bareilly-based jewellery firm aboard the Howrah-Indore Chambal Express. The accused posed as officers from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence to intimidate the courier and rob the consignment at Bhabua Road railway station in Bihar on October 22, 2026. Investigators have recovered 612.74 grams of gold following coordinated raids across several hideouts in Uttar Pradesh, while a hunt remains underway for two additional suspects who managed to evade capture.

Jeweller Employee Coerced by Imposters at Railway Station

The victim, identified as Sanjeev Chauhan, an employee of Sankalp Gold Private Limited owned by jeweller Sanjay Kumar Khandelwal, was transporting approximately 2.6 kilograms of gold from Kolkata to Bareilly. As the train halted at Bhabua Road station along the Gaya-Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya section, members of the criminal gang intercepted him under the pretext of being federal tax authorities.

The suspects forced Chauhan off the train after threatening him with immediate imprisonment and claiming they would organize formal raids on his employer’s premises if he refused to comply. Intimidated by the threats, the courier surrendered the high-value bullion consignment and his mobile phone, after which the gang fled the railway premises.

Special Investigation Team Identifies Inside Informer in Firm

Following the incident, Rail Superintendent of Police Anant Kumar Rai constituted a Special Investigation Team headed by Rail Deputy Superintendent of Police Gulshan Kumar to trace the perpetrators. The investigation soon established that the criminal network relied heavily on detailed operational intelligence provided by an insider working within the jewellery business.

Officers discovered that 25-year-old Sachin Gangwar, an employee working at the firm for a monthly salary of 15,000 rupees, functioned as an informer for the gang. Gangwar allegedly passed real-time updates regarding the exact departure schedule, transit route, and timing of the valuable consignment from Kolkata, which allowed the operatives to execute the heist with precise coordination.

Three Suspects Apprehended as Police Hunt Remaining Gang Members

Raiding parties tracked down three suspects across various districts of Uttar Pradesh. The arrested men were identified as 23-year-old Rohit Kumar from Bareilly district, 25-year-old Sachin Gangwar from Shahjahanpur district, and 29-year-old Varun Kumar from Kasganj district. Police seized 612.74 grams of the looted gold during search operations at locations linked to the trio.

Raiding teams continue to comb multiple locations across Uttar Pradesh to apprehend the two absconding suspects and recover the remaining portion of the stolen gold. Officials noted that the case underlines the severe operational risks involved in transporting valuable consignments by rail, particularly when organised syndicates compromise business personnel to execute target operations.
