How Did Police Uncover the Cyber Fraud Network?

The investigation began after a resident of the Sarai Akil police station area lodged a complaint on October 3, alleging that cybercriminals had cheated him of ₹50,000 by threatening him with arrest. Police registered FIR number 308/2026 and initiated an investigation into the suspected fraud network. Following technical surveillance and analysis of electronic evidence, investigators identified four suspected active members of the interstate gang.

The accused were subsequently apprehended within the jurisdiction of Sarai Akil Police Station.

How Did the Accused Allegedly Cheat Victims?

According to police, the accused used Telegram to contact individuals while impersonating senior police officers. They allegedly threatened victims with arrest in criminal cases and demanded money to prevent police action. Investigators said the gang also contacted people through mobile phones and collected their personal information. The accused allegedly changed mobile numbers, SIM cards and ATM cards regularly to conceal their identities and avoid detection.

Police believe these methods enabled the suspects to operate across state boundaries while making identification and investigation more difficult.

Who Were the Arrested Suspects?

According to the police statement, all four are residents of Sitapur district in Uttar Pradesh.

Investigators recovered six Android mobile phones, six ATM cards, one bank passbook and ₹15,000 in cash from their possession. Police said the recovered electronic devices and banking materials were being examined as part of the investigation.

Police registered the case under Sections 318(4), 317(2) and 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with Section 66C of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Section 318(4) concerns cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property, while Section 317(2) deals with dishonestly receiving or retaining stolen property. Section 111 addresses organised crime, and Section 66C of the IT Act concerns identity theft involving the fraudulent or dishonest use of another person’s electronic identification credentials.

Police identified 16 complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal associated with the suspected network, originating from several states, including Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Telangana and Karnataka.

Investigators also reported previous criminal cases involving one of the accused at Sakran Police Station in Sitapur district. Police said efforts were continuing to establish the criminal histories of other accused and examine their possible involvement in additional cyber fraud cases.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities examining the recovered evidence and suspected interstate connections.
