The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced WhatsApp-based services for provident fund subscribers and launched automatic settlement of eligible inactive accounts holding balances of up to ₹1,000. The two initiatives are aimed at making routine account services easier to access and reducing the paperwork involved in recovering small, unclaimed provident fund balances.
Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced the measures on November 1 during the EPFO’s 74th Foundation Day celebrations in New Delhi. The initiatives form part of the organisation’s efforts to expand digital service delivery as it approaches its 75th year.
The announcement is relevant to millions of salaried workers who depend on EPFO to manage their retirement savings. It also addresses a longstanding problem: small balances left behind when employees change jobs and fail to complete the process of transferring or withdrawing their old provident fund money.
Subscribers Can Check PF Details Through WhatsApp
Under the new facility, EPF subscribers will be able to access their provident fund balance, the latest five transactions and passbook information through EPFO’s verified WhatsApp service.
The service will also provide personalised guidance and assistance to members completing requirements related to the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PMVBRY), the government’s employment-linked incentive programme.
The move is intended to make routine information available through a platform that many workers already use regularly. Subscribers may no longer need to visit an EPFO office or navigate multiple online services simply to check basic account details.
However, the announcement does not mean that every EPFO service will now be available through WhatsApp. The facilities specifically identified by the Labour Ministry include balance checks, the latest five transactions, passbook information and assistance with PMVBRY-related requirements.
The ministry has described the channel as a verified WhatsApp service. Subscribers should therefore confirm that they are interacting with an official EPFO account rather than an unverified number claiming to provide provident fund assistance. The announcement does not provide a WhatsApp contact number or a complete list of additional services.
Small Inactive PF Accounts Will Be Settled Automatically
The second initiative targets eligible inoperative EPF accounts with balances of up to ₹1,000.
Under the new arrangement, subscribers with Aadhaar-verified inactive accounts will not have to submit individual claims to recover their eligible dues. Instead, EPFO will initiate settlement automatically after completing the prescribed identity and bank-account verification.
The verification requirement is important because the money must reach the rightful account holder. An inactive account cannot simply be closed and its balance transferred without establishing the beneficiary’s identity and payment details.
The Labour Ministry expects approximately one lakh accounts, involving a combined amount of around ₹5 crore, to benefit from the facility.
For workers who left small amounts in previous employers’ PF accounts, the change could remove a cumbersome step. Some employees change jobs, leave behind an old account and never return to claim a relatively small balance because the paperwork appears disproportionate to the amount involved.
The automatic process is intended to address precisely this problem.
The Automatic Settlement Plan Had Earlier Received Approval
The November launch follows an earlier decision by EPFO’s Central Board of Trustees.
At its 239th meeting in March 2026, the board approved a pilot project to automatically initiate settlement for approximately 1.33 lakh inoperative accounts with balances of up to ₹1,000. Those accounts involved nearly ₹5.68 crore.
The latest announcement therefore represents the rollout of an initiative that had already received institutional approval. The Labour Ministry’s November statement estimates that around one lakh accounts involving ₹5 crore will benefit from the launched facility.
The development also comes amid broader efforts to improve EPFO’s claim-processing systems. During the Foundation Day event, the organisation highlighted that its average claim settlement time had fallen to 2.57 days in October 2026, following improvements associated with its CITES 2.01 technology platform.
EPFO serves approximately eight crore contributory members and manages a retirement corpus of nearly ₹32 lakh crore, according to the ministry.
What This Means For You
For salaried employees, the WhatsApp facility could make it easier to check PF balances and recent transactions without visiting an office. The automatic settlement initiative could also help people recover small sums left in old, inactive accounts without filing separate claims.
However, the ₹1,000 limit applies to the automatic-settlement initiative, not to ordinary PF withdrawals or the WhatsApp service. The automatic process is restricted to eligible Aadhaar-verified inoperative accounts and remains subject to identity and bank-account verification.
Subscribers should also avoid sharing Aadhaar details, bank credentials, OTPs or other sensitive information with unverified WhatsApp accounts claiming to represent EPFO.
The two measures address different problems but share a common objective: making provident fund services easier to access while reducing administrative delays for workers. Their effectiveness will depend on how smoothly the verification and payment processes operate once the new facilities are implemented.
