Uttarakhand Police’s Special Task Force (STF) and State Cyber Cell have arrested a 45-year-old man from Maharashtra in connection with an alleged ₹85 lakh online trading fraud registered in Dehradun in 2024. The accused, identified as Yasin Yusuf, was apprehended in Sangli district after investigators traced nearly ₹29 lakh of the defrauded money to a bank account linked to him.

How Did the ₹85 Lakh Fraud Take Place?

According to police, the case involved a Dehradun resident who was allegedly persuaded to invest money in online commodities trading. The fraudsters reportedly promised attractive returns to encourage the complainant to invest.

The victim subsequently lost approximately ₹85 lakh, following which a cybercrime investigation was initiated. Police are examining the financial transactions connected with the alleged investment fraud to establish the involvement of other suspects.

How Did Police Trace the Accused?

Senior Superintendent of Police, STF, Ajai Singh said investigators discovered that nearly ₹29 lakh of the stolen amount had been transferred to a bank account associated with Yusuf.

The financial trail helped police identify the suspect and establish a connection between his account and the alleged fraudulent transactions.

Investigators had earlier issued Yusuf a notice directing him to appear before the STF in Dehradun for questioning. However, he failed to appear as instructed.

Where Was the Accused Arrested?

Following the suspect’s failure to appear, an STF team traced him to Maharashtra. The team subsequently arrested Yusuf with assistance from Maharashtra Police. Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify and apprehend other individuals allegedly involved in the ₹85 lakh fraud.

The case highlights the financial risks associated with online trading schemes that promise unusually high investment returns.

Investors should independently verify trading platforms and avoid transferring funds solely on the basis of promises of substantial profits. The investigation also demonstrates the importance of tracing bank transactions to identify suspects connected with financial cybercrime.
