Kolkata: The Union Home Ministry has taken disciplinary action against Calcutta Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and Deputy Commissioner Indira Mukherjee for allegedly maligning the office of the West Bengal Governor. The central government, acting on a detailed report submitted by Governor CV Ananda Bose, accused the officers of promoting and spreading false allegations, which the Governor described as canards.

This action follows a report submitted by Governor Bose in the last week of June, highlighting instances where Calcutta Police officers obstructed victims of post-poll violence from meeting him, despite having the requisite permissions. The report also accused other police officers at the Raj Bhavan of encouraging a woman employee to concoct allegations during April-May 2024, further tarnishing the office’s reputation.

Copies of the letter were sent to the state government on July 4, detailing these allegations. The report emphasized that the officers’ conduct was unbecoming of public servants and showed a disregard for the Conduct Rules, leading to the Union Home Ministry’s decision to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the involved IPS officers.
