Trichy City Cybercrime Police have busted an illegal SIM box operation allegedly used to support cybercriminal gangs operating from foreign countries. A 40-year-old engineering graduate has been arrested following a raid near Puthur, where police seized multiple GSM VoIP gateways and other electronic equipment. The network allegedly facilitated online investment scams, fake trading platforms and cryptocurrency fraud targeting Indian residents.

Police said more than 100 residents had collectively lost approximately ₹4.5 crore to such scams over the past ten months.

How Was the SIM Box Farm Discovered?

Acting on intelligence inputs and a complaint from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), cybercrime officers raided a premises near Puthur on Tuesday.

Investigators recovered several multi-port GSM VoIP gateways, a modem, UPS units, cameras and related equipment.

The arrested suspect allegedly operated the setup. Police have withheld his identity as investigations continue. Deputy Commissioner B Manikandan said investigators were examining whether additional SIM box facilities were operating in the region.

How Did the SIM Boxes Help Fraudsters?

SIM boxes allow internet-based international calls to be routed through local SIM cards, making overseas communications appear to originate from domestic mobile numbers.

Cybercriminals can exploit this infrastructure for fraudulent calls, bulk messages, phishing and OTP-related scams.

Police said the devices helped foreign operators conceal the actual origin of communications while reducing calling costs. Such systems are also associated with digital arrest scams, extortion and fraudulent loan recovery threats.

Which Cyber Frauds Were Linked to the Network?

Investigators believe the infrastructure supported investment fraud involving fake stock trading applications, WhatsApp groups and cryptocurrency schemes promising unusually high returns.

Police indicated that several investment fraud networks targeting Indians operate from Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. The international nature of these operations complicates efforts to trace suspects and recover stolen funds.

What Did Police Reveal About Cybercrime Complaints?

Trichy recorded approximately 400 cybercrime complaints last year.

Police attributed a subsequent decline in incidents partly to sustained awareness programmes educating residents about online fraud. Investigators also warned that fraudulent entities frequently impersonate institutional traders on social media to solicit investments.

Has the Investigation Revealed Other SIM Box Networks?

Technical analysis led investigators to additional locations in Trichy and Thanjavur, where ten e-SIM-enabled devices were seized. Police said the discoveries indicated an interstate network. Separately, authorities in Agra dismantled a similar operation and recovered eight SIM boxes.

The420 Insight: What Does This Mean?

The Trichy operation highlights how overseas cybercriminals can use domestic telecommunications infrastructure to conceal their identities and target Indian victims.

The seizures underline the importance of monitoring illegal SIM gateways and investigating the connections between fraudulent investment platforms and the networks supporting their communications.
