How Was the Accused Linked to the Fraud?
According to investigators, Maner’s name emerged during the investigation of FIR number 75/2024, registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Dehradun.
The investigation established that, in September 2024, the complainant transferred ₹29.50 lakh into a Bank of Maharashtra account allegedly associated with the accused. Police found that the account formed part of the banking network used to receive money obtained through cyber fraud.
The transaction became an important element of the investigation into the wider ₹84.70 lakh fraud case. Investigators subsequently examined the accused’s suspected connection with the financial trail.
Why Was the Accused Wanted in Two Cases?
Apart from FIR number 75/2024, Maner was also wanted in another case registered at the same police station under FIR number 71/2024. Police had earlier issued him a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), directing him to participate in the investigation.
However, despite receiving the notice, he allegedly failed to appear before investigators and did not cooperate with the inquiry. The STF subsequently began searching for him.
His suspected involvement in two registered cases and failure to cooperate with investigators formed part of the circumstances leading to the operation in Maharashtra.
What Happened During the Arrest Operation?
Following the investigation in Dehradun, an STF cyber team travelled to Sangli district in Maharashtra to locate the accused. Officers conducted inquiries and surveillance before arresting Maner on October 26. Police also recovered a mobile phone and a SIM card allegedly used in connection with the suspected cyber fraud activities.
The seized electronic items may assist investigators in examining communications and identifying possible links with other individuals associated with the suspected fraud network.
According to the STF, efforts are continuing to identify and arrest other accused persons allegedly connected with the cybercrime network. The investigation remains ongoing, with police examining the financial transactions and suspected involvement of additional individuals. The case highlights the importance of tracing beneficiary bank accounts and following transaction records during investigations into organised cyber fraud.
