Know Why is India Banning Chinese Apps To Protect Its Citizen

By Shambhavi Singh: Taking another bold move, India on November 24 banned 43 Chinese apps including famous apps such as AliExpress. This is the fourth such ban against Chinese app after a standoff between India and China in Ladakh.

An official statement said that these apps were a threat to the sovereignty and integrity of the country. It further said that these apps were also a threat for the defence, security and public order of India.

Some of the popular apps include online shopping apps of Alibaba Group, short video sharing app Snack video, Business card reader app Cam Card, truck and driver aggregator Lalamove are some of the major ones that have been blocked this time.

According to a source, all these apps were scanned for months and fault were found in their operations. Severs of these apps were stealing Indians data and were being solid in international market weakening the position of India.

Lalamove is one of the fastest-growing logistical service in the world and the decision to ban it was a major one.

The government had first banned 59 apps on June 29, 2020, and on September 2 it had banned 118 more apps. Earlier apps like Tiktok, PUBG Mobile were also banned resulting in a great loss for China. The apps are being banned under section 69A of the Information Technology Act.

The Chinese apps were allegedly collecting huge amounts of data that were not at all related to the service that the particular app provided.

These apps took several security-sensitive and intrusive permissions thus breaking into our personal and confidential information. The threat to a user’s data has increased enormously in this virtual world where starting from food to paying electricity, everything is available online just at a click.

A senior ministry official said the apps were attempting to steal and surreptitiously transmit users’ data in an “unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India”.

Banning Chinese apps puts pressure on China, as its trade is hugely impacted. India’s move proves a major loss to China’s ever-growing economy and hits its revenue system. The Chinese are losing the volume from Indian markets and the vacuum that has been created in India is compelling and encouraging the Indians to develop and make their own apps and games, which will generate great domestic revenue and ultimately hitting the Chinese market and leaving a festering sore for China to cry upon.

China on Wednesday said it was firmly opposed to India’s decision to block 43 more Chinese apps on national security grounds, claiming the move violated WTO rules.

The move of the Indian government is being appreciated as it also providing opportunities for the growing generations to create apps and softwares and thus getting recognized at the national level.
