Tamil Nadu is facing a growing wave of cyber fraud, with citizens losing nearly ₹1,010 crore to various scams by July this year. In a swift response, authorities have already frozen ₹314 crore and returned ₹62.4 crore to victims, showing significant improvement compared to last year, when losses totaled ₹1,673 crore and only a small portion was recovered.

Statewide and Pan-India Operations

The Tamil Nadu police have launched Operation Thiraineeku-I, a state-wide initiative that led to the arrest of 76 individuals linked to more than 150 complaints. These cases alone involved losses of nearly ₹42 crore. In parallel, Operation Hydra, conducted across several states, targeted organized cybercrime networks operating fake call centers and digital manipulation schemes. Seven offenders were arrested from states including Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Assam, and Delhi.

Authorities also used the Goondas Act to detain 18 repeat offenders, sending a clear message that organized cybercriminals will face strict consequences. Officials emphasize that these operations are not just about arrests but aim to dismantle entire syndicates and prevent future frauds.

How Citizens Can Protect Themselves

Cyber scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and vigilance is key. Citizens are advised to avoid sharing sensitive information such as bank details, OTPs, or Aadhaar numbers over calls or messages. Unsolicited offers for loans or high-return investments should always be verified. Reporting suspicious activity promptly can help authorities act quickly and prevent larger losses.

Tamil Nadu’s proactive approach highlights the importance of rapid action, coordination, and public awareness in tackling cybercrime. While scammers are evolving, timely policing and informed citizens remain the best defense. Staying alert, verifying sources, and reporting fraud immediately can save both money and trouble.
