A respected homoeopathy practitioner from Junagadh, Gujarat, has fallen prey to a meticulously planned government job scam, losing more than ₹50 lakh. The doctor, who has dedicated over 25 years of service to society through the Jai Sardar Trust Hospital, was duped by an Ahmedabad-based couple who promised lucrative government contracts and a clerical job at the state secretariat.

The accused, identified as a husband-wife duo, reportedly gained the doctor’s trust by visiting his home regularly, portraying themselves as well-connected individuals with strong political backing. They offered him tree-maintenance subcontract work along the Delhi Highway corridor and assured a secure clerical post for one of his relatives in Gandhinagar.

Trail of Betrayal

From October 2023 to June 2024, the doctor and his wife transferred money to the couple through both cash and bank transactions, amounting to over ₹50 lakh. To make the deal appear authentic, the fraudsters even deposited ₹73,500 as “salary” for the supposed job position.

Their scheme began to unravel when, in April 2024, the victim received a ₹33 lakh cheque from the alleged “assistant of an MLA.” The cheque, however, bounced due to a stop-payment instruction, a red flag that raised suspicion in the victim’s mind. Soon after, the accused vanished, switched off their mobile phones, and vacated their rented home, leaving the doctor and his wife devastated.

Feeling betrayed and helpless, the doctor approached the Junagadh City B Division police station, where an official complaint was registered.

Justice in Motion

The Junagadh police acted swiftly, tracing and detaining the couple. Investigation Officer Aniruddhsinh Gohil confirmed that they are being interrogated and that efforts are underway to recover the siphoned funds.

This incident highlights a worrying trend of fake job scams in India, which often target educated professionals with promises of government employment or contracts. Such cases not only result in devastating financial losses but also erode public trust in genuine recruitment and contract processes.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious of offers that seem “too good to be true” and to verify job postings and government contracts only through official portals. For the Junagadh doctor, however, the betrayal has left a deep scar, one that underscores the growing menace of white-collar crimes in the country.
