A year-long investigation into an elaborate cyber fraud scheme has culminated in the arrest of a key suspect in Panchkula. Authorities say the case, which began with a complaint from a garment trader in Zirakpur, underscores the growing sophistication of online investment scams that continue to exploit unsuspecting citizens.
A Complaint That Sparked a Year-Long Probe
Panchkula police announced the arrest of a primary suspect in a ₹1.5 crore cyber fraud case, following more than a year of investigation. The case began on October 10, 2024, when 43-year-old Somesh Mittal, a resident of Sector 21 and the owner of a garment business in Zirakpur, filed a formal complaint. According to the complaint, Mittal had been persuaded in late 2023 to invest in what appeared to be a legitimate trading opportunity. The scheme promised high returns and, at first, gave every appearance of credibility. But the transactions, carried out over several months, soon revealed themselves to be part of a calculated deception.

How Telegram Became the Gateway
The fraud took root in November 2023, when Mittal was approached via Telegram, a messaging app increasingly used by both investors and fraudsters alike. He was directed to download a mobile application that purportedly facilitated trading. Trusting the assurances of large profits, he made a series of transactions between November 2023 and March 2024. By the time he realized the truth, Mittal had lost ₹1.5 crore. Efforts to reach the individuals behind the scheme failed; the phone numbers that had once been responsive were suddenly switched off, leaving him without recourse.
A Breakthrough Arrest in Uttar Pradesh
Despite repeated failed attempts to locate the perpetrators, police efforts eventually led them to Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Etah district in Uttar Pradesh. He was apprehended during a targeted raid and subsequently placed in five days of police custody. Investigators say Kumar provided key information under interrogation, admitting that the fraud was not a solitary endeavor. His statements pointed to the involvement of multiple individuals, prompting police to widen their search. Authorities have since launched additional raids across Uttar Pradesh in pursuit of other suspects linked to the case.
A Broader Warning on Online Schemes
The arrest is significant not only for its progress in resolving Mittal’s case but also for the broader message it sends. Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution when confronted with online investment opportunities, many of which carry the veneer of legitimacy while masking fraudulent intent.
Officials confirm that the investigation remains ongoing and anticipate further arrests as they work to dismantle the network responsible. For now, the case serves as both a warning and a reminder of the vulnerabilities that persist in India’s rapidly expanding digital economy
