A serious breach of trust has emerged from within the Uttar Pradesh Police in Bhadohi district, where a sub-inspector and a home guard posted at Gopiganj police station have been arrested for allegedly participating in a planned fraud. The two policemen are accused of colluding with professional conmen, impersonating Crime Branch officials, and cheating a Varanasi-based trader of ₹5 lakh on the pretext of selling seven kilograms of silver.
Following confirmation of their involvement, Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Manglik ordered the immediate suspension and arrest of both personnel. They have since been produced before the court and sent to judicial custody.
Complaint Exposes Inside Collusion
According to police officials, the case surfaced after a formal complaint by Ashish Raghuvanshi, a trader from the Pandeypur–Lalpur area of Varanasi. The complainant stated that around a month ago, his relative Amar Bahadur Singh alias Murli informed him that a man named Rajendra, a resident of Chauri village, had allegedly recovered a large quantity of silver while demolishing his old house and wanted to sell it discreetly.
To build trust, the accused initially showed 12 silver coins, which were later verified and found to be genuine. Convinced by this demonstration, the trader agreed to purchase the silver at a rate of ₹80,000 per kilogram, finalising a deal worth several lakhs.
Fraud Executed Near Roadside Eatery
On November 27, the trader was called to a spot near a roadside dhaba in the Gopiganj area. There, Rajbahadur and Rajendra collected ₹5 lakh in cash, assuring the trader they would return shortly with the silver.
Instead, they came back with a bag filled with bricks and stones. Before the trader could raise an alarm, two men arrived at the spot, introduced themselves as Crime Branch officers, and staged a dramatic arrest of the supposed silver sellers. Claiming official action, they took the men away on a motorcycle.
When the trader later approached Gopiganj police station to verify the incident, he discovered that no Crime Branch operation had taken place and no such arrests had been recorded.
One Arrest Leads to Shocking Revelation
Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered on December 8 against Murli Singh, Rajbahadur Singh, Rajendra Singh, and two unidentified policemen. During the investigation, police arrested Rajbahadur on Sunday.
During interrogation, Rajbahadur disclosed that the men impersonating Crime Branch officers were Sub-Inspector Suresh Prasad Saxena and Home Guard Satya Prakash Yadav, both posted at Gopiganj police station. The disclosure triggered immediate departmental action.

Swift Action by Police Leadership
SP Abhimanyu Manglik confirmed that both accused policemen were suspended with immediate effect once their involvement was established. They were subsequently arrested and sent to jail.
“This is not a routine cheating case. It is a direct assault on the integrity of the police force. Any officer found colluding with criminals will face the strictest action,” the SP said.
Officials added that the investigation is ongoing to trace other accused and to determine whether the policemen were involved in similar frauds earlier.
Trust Deficit and Institutional Damage
The incident has raised serious concerns about internal accountability and supervision within the police system. The misuse of uniform and authority to facilitate a crime has significantly damaged public trust.
Observers note that frauds involving insiders carry deeper consequences, as they exploit institutional credibility itself. The Bhadohi case highlights how criminal networks gain confidence and reach when aided by those entrusted with enforcing the law.
Police officials have maintained that further arrests and disclosures remain possible as the probe continues.
