Cybercriminals allegedly hacked government email IDs in Amroha and issued 1,820 fake birth certificates across 17 states in three days.
How Were the Fake Certificates Issued?
Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district are investigating the alleged misuse of government email IDs to generate 1,820 fraudulent birth certificates within three days. The certificates were reportedly issued using the identities of individuals from several states.
According to police, the fraud involved the hacking of official email accounts belonging to village secretaries. The attackers allegedly used these accounts and one-time passwords (OTPs) to access the certificate issuance system and generate unauthorised documents. The suspected irregularities were identified in two blocks of Amroha district, raising concerns about the misuse of government credentials in public record systems.
Which Areas Were Affected?
In the Joya block, 498 fake birth certificates were allegedly issued on October 6 and 7 using the official ID associated with Tofapur village. These certificates were linked to individuals from 17 states. Another 1,322 fraudulent certificates were reportedly generated on October 5 using credentials associated with four village panchayats in the Mandi Dhanaura block. The documents concerned individuals from 15 states.
Together, the two incidents account for 1,820 suspected fake birth certificates. Authorities are examining how official credentials were compromised and used to issue documents without authorisation.

What Action Have Police Taken?
Amroha Superintendent of Police Lakhan Singh Yadav said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted on Friday, nine days after the suspected fraud came to light. Additional Superintendent of Police Dr Pradeep Kumar has been appointed to head the SIT. Circle Officer Dr Ramakant Sagar and officials from the development department will assist the investigation.
The team will examine the hacking methods and work to identify those responsible for the unauthorised issuance of certificates.
What Happens to the Compromised Government IDs?
The Chief Medical Officer has lodged an FIR against unidentified individuals at the cyber police station. Village secretary Rajiv Kumar has also submitted a complaint at Bachhraun police station. Authorities have deactivated the official IDs of all 576 village panchayats as a precautionary measure. Fresh credentials will be issued only after verification is completed.
The420 Insight: The alleged issuance of 1,820 fraudulent certificates demonstrates the potential consequences of compromised government accounts. The investigation will be important in determining how official credentials and OTPs were misused and identifying those responsible for creating the unauthorised records.
