Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kalpana Verma, posted in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district, was suspended on Thursday following allegations by a businessman that she misused her official position and caused him financial losses amounting to nearly ₹2 crore. The state government said the action was taken based on a preliminary inquiry report which found her conduct “unbecoming of a civil servant.”
The case dates back to December 16, when Raipur-based businessman Deepak Tandon submitted a written complaint to Director General of Police Arun Dev Gautam. In his complaint, Tandon claimed he had known DSP Verma, her father and brother for nearly five years, and alleged that during this period, the officer used her influence to create circumstances that resulted in substantial financial losses for him.
Senior police officials said a departmental inquiry was initiated soon after the complaint was received. “The preliminary findings include WhatsApp chats, alleged sharing of sensitive information and suspicious financial transactions, all of which are inconsistent with the expected conduct of a public servant,” a senior officer said.

Preliminary probe flags multiple irregularities
According to the suspension order, the inquiry revealed “concerning” financial transactions and contradictions between statements recorded during the investigation and available digital evidence. The order also refers to indications of illegal financial gains obtained during duty, misuse of official position and acquisition of disproportionate assets.
The state government held that these acts amounted to a violation of Rule 3 of the Chhattisgarh Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1965. Based on this, Verma was placed under suspension with immediate effect under Rule 9 of the Chhattisgarh Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1966.
During the suspension period, her headquarters have been fixed at the Police Headquarters in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar. She will be entitled to a subsistence allowance as per applicable service rules.
Forensic scrutiny of digital trails and bank transactions
Police sources said documents submitted by the complainant, along with WhatsApp chats and bank transaction records, are being subjected to forensic examination. Investigators are also probing whether any third parties benefited from the alleged transactions and whether official information was improperly shared.
Officials said the focus of the inquiry is to establish the nature of the financial dealings and determine the extent to which official authority may have been misused.
Attempts to contact DSP Kalpana Verma for her response were unsuccessful till the time of filing this report.
Further action not ruled out
Senior officers at the police headquarters clarified that the suspension is a preliminary administrative step and that a detailed investigation is ongoing. As more documentary and digital evidence is analysed, further departmental or legal action cannot be ruled out.
Legal experts said that if the allegations are substantiated, the officer could face stringent disciplinary proceedings in addition to possible criminal charges.
The state police have reiterated that the probe will be conducted impartially and that a final decision will be taken only after a comprehensive assessment of all facts and evidence.
