PERTH, AUSTRALIA — The University of Western Australia (UWA) is currently investigating a data breach that has exposed the password information of thousands of its staff and students. The breach, which was discovered on a Saturday night, prompted the university to lock users out of its system and urge a campus-wide password reset. According to UWA’s chief information officer, Fiona Bishop, a critical incident management team was immediately activated to implement “countermeasures” and begin a recovery process. The university’s IT teams and digital experts worked tirelessly over the weekend to secure the system and assist students and staff in resetting their credentials. Bishop praised the quick response, noting she was “exceptionally pleased” with the efforts to contain the incident. The university has also granted a three-day extension for student assessments to accommodate the disruption.
Following Footprints in the Sand
The university has described the breach as a complex and ongoing investigation, with Bishop likening the process to “following footprints in the sand.” While the investigation is still in its early stages, there is currently no evidence to suggest that any information beyond passwords was compromised. The university has also confirmed that there has been no communication from any parties claiming responsibility for the breach, and there is no indication that it was a ransomware attack.

Continued Support and Future Cybersecurity
In the coming days, UWA will continue to provide support for its community as they reset their passwords. Bishop acknowledged that this effort would require sustained attention, stating that the university would “man that effort over the course of the next couple of days.” Looking ahead, Bishop highlighted the growing threat to educational institutions, describing universities as “powerhouses of information and learning” and thus prime targets for cyberattacks. The university has committed to continuing its work on strengthening its cybersecurity measures to protect against future incidents.
Classes to Continue as Planned
Despite the widespread nature of the breach, the university has stated that it does not expect any interruptions to teaching. Classes are scheduled to proceed as planned, with the university focusing on the technical recovery and investigation. The goal is to ensure that all staff and students can regain access to their accounts as soon as possible, allowing for a return to normal academic operations.
