MUMBAI: A 67-year-old Navi Mumbai resident, Rajendra Gupta, has accused Vashi-based ophthalmologists D. V. Pandit and his son, Dr. Chandan Pandit, of operating on his eyes despite knowing his blood sugar levels were elevated. Gupta claims both procedures left him with worsening vision and, eventually, a viral infection. His complaint, along with those of four other patients, prompted the Navi Mumbai police to register an FIR earlier this week. No arrests have yet been made.

Operations Without Awaiting Test Results

Gupta’s troubles began in December 2024, when he visited Dr. Pandit Eye Surgery and Laser Hospital in Vashi for severe eye pain. He alleges Dr. Chandan charged Rs 75,000 for right-eye surgery but withheld medical papers. When his vision deteriorated, Gupta was urged to undergo left-eye surgery in February 2025. Despite sending him for a sugar test, the doctor allegedly operated before the report arrived, later demanding an additional Rs 10,000 mid-procedure for “removing a boil.”

Infections, Questionable Credentials, and Other Complaints

After the second surgery, Gupta says he experienced extreme pain, total vision loss in the operated eye, and recurrent hospital bills. A follow-up revealed a viral infection. He also discovered that his medical documents were issued in Dr. D. V. Pandit’s name, though the procedures were conducted by his son, and that neither was registered with the Maharashtra Medical Council. Learning that four other senior citizens had similar experiences, Gupta approached the police. Medical verification by a civil surgeon confirmed his claims, leading to the FIR. The case has now intensified calls for stricter verification of medical practitioners and tighter regulation of private clinics to protect patients from malpractice, especially vulnerable senior citizens who often rely on trust when seeking treatment. There needs stricter oversight of private clinics. Authorities have stated that investigations are ongoing and that action will be taken to ensure accountability and justice for all affected patients.
