KOLKATA: Three African men and two Manipur women have been arrested for allegedly defrauding a woman of Rs 27,500 after communicating with her using a mobile messaging app.

The five were apprehended late Friday in New Delhi by a team from the Salt Lake cyber crime police station.

On December 1, a woman from Gopalpur near Rajarhat in east Kolkata filed a police complaint alleging that she received a WhatsApp message from a person identifying herself as Theresa Deb Wongie.

According to a Bidhannagar commissionerate officer, the woman received many texts in which the person claiming herself to be Wongie and asked her whether she wanted to “export sarees from West Bengal.”

“In order to be selected for exporting sarees, the victim was initially requested to send in a presentation about Indian sari tradition.”

A few days later, she received a message from the same number confirming her “selection and eligibility to export sarees.”

In April, the woman got another message in which she was informed that gifts had been purchased for her and her husband and that images had been supplied to her, along with the website address of a courier service and a tracking number.

“A few days later, the Rajarhat resident received a call from a woman who identified herself as a customs inspector and demanded Rs 27,500 in clearing fees.” She was also given a bank account number to which the victim transferred funds.”

However, no “present” was delivered to her door.

The complainant received another call in which the person sought more money. Later she realised that she had been deceived and filed a complaint. Based on her complaint, an investigation was carried out and conmen were tracked in Delhi. A team from Kolkata police reached Delhi and arrested the gang in a raid.

They were all brought before a Delhi court, which granted them a seven-day transit remand.
