Sivaganga District Crime Branch police have arrested two alleged agents in connection with a multi-crore online investment app scam in which hundreds of people were reportedly lured with promises of doubling their money within 45 days.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Ramesh, 34, of Paiyur near Sivaganga, and Satheesh, 32, of Manickampatti in Madurai district. Police suspect that both acted as intermediaries for the fraudulent investment network and helped bring investors into the scheme.

The case came to light after a large number of people began approaching the police with complaints about money invested through online applications promoted as high-return investment platforms.

Investors Lured With Promise of Doubling Money

According to the complaints, individuals associated with the scheme advertised investment opportunities through online applications, including FQL and VJ. Potential investors were allegedly told that their money would double within 45 days, making the scheme attractive to people looking for quick and substantial returns.

Thousands of residents from areas around Sivaganga reportedly responded to the offers. Investors from places including Paiyur, Aiyampatti, Allur, Udayanathapuram, Karampatti and Purasadaiudaippu are among those who allegedly put their money into the scheme.

The amounts invested by individuals reportedly ranged from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh. Many investors are said to have deposited their savings after being persuaded by the agents and other persons promoting the scheme.

However, when the promised period ended, investors allegedly did not receive the returns they had been assured. The principal amounts were also reportedly not returned, leading to a growing number of complaints.

More Than 550 Complaints Filed

Sivaganga district police have been receiving complaints continuously from people who claim to have lost money through the investment scheme. More than 550 people have reportedly approached the authorities so far.

The scale of the complaints has raised concerns over the size of the suspected financial fraud and the possible involvement of a wider network of agents and operators.

Investigators are examining how the online applications were promoted, how investors were brought into the scheme and where the money transferred by victims ultimately went. The role of intermediaries who allegedly collected or facilitated investments is also being examined.

Two Alleged Agents Taken Into Custody

As part of the investigation, the Sivaganga District Crime Branch arrested Ramesh and Satheesh. Police suspect that the two worked as agents in the fraudulent investment operation and acted as a link between investors and those running the scheme.

The arrests are expected to help investigators trace the wider network behind the operation and identify other individuals involved in soliciting investments.

The financial transactions associated with the alleged fraud are also likely to be examined to establish the movement of funds and determine the total amount collected from investors.

Investigation Focuses on Wider Network

The police investigation is continuing amid a growing number of complaints. Investigators are expected to scrutinise bank accounts, digital payment records, mobile numbers and other electronic evidence connected with the alleged investment operation.

The case also highlights the risks associated with online investment schemes that promise unusually high returns within a very short period. Cybercrime experts have repeatedly cautioned that guaranteed or near-guaranteed returns are often used to create a sense of urgency and credibility among potential victims.

People considering online investments are advised to verify whether the platform and entities promoting it are properly regulated before transferring money. Investors should also avoid relying solely on social media promotions, referral agents or claims of quick and guaranteed profits.
