The fraud came to light when the company’s chief accountant, while reviewing financial transactions, noticed unauthorized debits from their corporate bank account. A deeper probe revealed that an unidentified hacker had compromised the company’s bank-linked email ID, allowing them to execute the fraudulent transfer seamlessly.
Acting swiftly, the firm alerted the West Cyber Police Unit, prompting an immediate crackdown by Mumbai’s Cyber Crime Team, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber) Datta Nalawade, along with Senior Inspector Dattaram Chavan and Inspector Nivruti Bawaskar. Within just three hours, police successfully froze eight fraudulent bank accounts, recovering a majority of the stolen funds—marking Mumbai Cyber Police’s largest-ever financial recovery.

A woman named Aakruti Desai, along with her accomplices, gained the victim’s trust through platforms like Topface and WhatsApp, convincing them to transfer money across multiple accounts. The victim officially reported the fraud on April 2, 2025, leading to a case registration at the South Cyber Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.
