Lucknow Police Issues Advisory Warning Pensioners of Cyber Fraud in Life Certificate Verification Scams

The Lucknow Cyber Crime Cell has issued a warning to pension holders about a new fraud targeting them. Scammers are using online updates for “life certificates” to trick pensioners into sharing sensitive details, which they then use to empty their bank accounts. The public has been urged to stay vigilant and avoid sharing OTPs or personal information with unknown callers.

In an important alert, the Cyber Crime Cell of Hazratganj, Police Commissionerate Lucknow, has warned pension holders about a new method being used by cybercriminals to deceive them. This latest scam targets pensioners by exploiting the online process of updating life certificates, which is required for pension continuance.

According to the Cyber Crime Cell, fraudsters are contacting pensioners under the pretense of helping them update their life certificates online. They ask the victims to share personal details such as their pension account numbers, date of birth, bank details, and Aadhaar information. The criminals then claim to send a One-Time Password (OTP) for verification and request the pensioners to share the OTP with them.

Once the OTP is shared, the fraudsters gain access to the victim’s pension account and transfer all available funds to fake accounts, often referred to as “wallets,” making it difficult for the victims to retrieve their money.

The Cyber Crime Cell has emphasized that no legitimate pension authority will ever ask for sensitive details over the phone or request OTPs for verification. Pensioners are urged to physically visit the Pension Office for updates or to use official online channels themselves. The public has also been advised to immediately report any such suspicious calls to the nearest cyber crime cell.

The police have called on citizens to be extra cautious and spread awareness about this scam among pensioners to prevent them from becoming victims of such frauds. The alert is a timely reminder of the growing threats posed by cybercriminals and the importance of being cautious with online processes.

This latest warning comes as part of a broader effort by the Cyber Crime Cell Hazratganj to safeguard the public from increasing online scams targeting vulnerable groups, particularly senior citizens and pension holders.
