Internet And Mobile Connectivity Still A Distant Dream For Over 25,000 Villages In India
NEW DELHI: Although India is one of the major telecom and internet markets, there are still over 25000 inhabited villages that lack cell and internet connectivity. However, these communities also contain those afflicted by Left Wing Extremism (LWE).
The most recent information is contained in the government’s response to the Lok Sabha, in which the Centre confirmed that, according to data provided by Telecom Service Providers, 25,067 villages out of an estimated 5.97 lakh villages did not have cellular or internet services.
Furthermore, according to data presented by the government in the Lok Sabha, Odisha has the most villages without cellular or internet coverage (6099), followed by Madhya Pradesh (2612) and Maharashtra (2328).
Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha Benny Behanan had requested a response from the Ministry of Communications, inquiring as to how many villages in the country were without cell or internet service due to LWE. Devusinh Chauhan, Minister of State for Communications, responded to the query.
Data also shows that all 12,168 villages in Punjab, 90 villages in Puducherry, 103 villages in Delhi, and 84 villages in Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu have connectivity.
