Insurance Fraud: Scammers Siphoned Rs 70 Lakh By Offering Bonus, 2 Held

ALIGARH: Cyber Police Station of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh has arrested two scammers who used to cheat people by posing as insurance agents.

The gang had last year cheated a local – Anil Kumar Bansal, of over Rs 70 lakh by luring him to offer a bonus on his existing insurance policy. The conmen first posing as insurance officers make a contact with their victim.

Through the leaked database they have all the vital details of insurance policyholders. To win their confidence, scammers read out residential addresses, mobile numbers, policy details and other information to appear genuine, police said.

Once the insurance holder is convinced the gang start weaving a trap for him by offering an exciting bonus on their policy. “As they know all the details of the customer they simply offer an attractive bonus and demand the customer to pay some money for the transaction charges and other formalities. It is here when the customer starts paying money,” the officer said.

The gang keeps demanding money for different purposes by showing the customer a cheque of Rs 12 Lakh. It was finally, after making a payment of Rs 70 lakh the victim realised that he was cheated and the gang stopped taking his call.

The victim – Anil Kumar Bansal, contacted the police, which registered an FIR and started a digital investigation.  Through technical surveillance, two people were arrested.

Police have found 17 bank accounts from the accused in which around Rs 3.50 lakh was deposited.  They are trying to ascertain how many people were cheated by the gang and the money made by them through cheating.

Police are also trying to track the source of the insurance data leak to take strict action against the company.
