Government Bans Salami Shastra for Ministers, IAS, and IPS Officers, Marking the End of a British-Era Tradition!

MADHYA PRADESH: In a significant move to modernize police practices, the Madhya Pradesh Police Headquarters has directed all personnel to discontinue the traditional salami custom, labeling it a relic of colonial rule. As per the state government’s decision outlined way back in a letter of 2007, the privilege of receiving salutes has been restricted exclusively to the Honorable Governor.
Despite this directive, authorities have noted widespread non-compliance, raising concerns about discipline and professionalism within the force. The police department has strongly emphasized that ignoring government instructions not only undermines organizational integrity but also perpetuates outdated traditions that no longer align with constitutional values.

What is Salami?
In the police tradition, a “Salami” involves the presentation of the Salami Shastra, accompanied by ceremonial music and a salute to ministers, senior IAS and IPS officers, political dignitaries, and uniformed officers. However, the Madhya Pradesh government has now restricted the practice, allowing the Salami to be performed only for the Governor of the state, excluding all others, including the Chief Minister.
In a sternly worded circular, senior officials reminded personnel of the importance of adhering to the mandate, urging them to prioritize service efficiency over ceremonial formalities. The directive categorically stated that the continuation of such colonial-era customs tarnishes the modern image of the police force and disrupts the chain of command.
The move has been welcomed as a progressive step towards streamlining operations and reinforcing discipline in one of the nation’s most critical institutions. The department has called upon all ranks to ensure strict compliance with the order, warning that violations would not be tolerated.
This reform serves as a reminder of the police’s commitment to uphold democratic principles, fostering a culture of equality and efficiency. By shedding its colonial baggage, the Madhya Pradesh Police aims to align itself with the aspirations of a modern, independent India.
