Goa Police’s Cyber Crime Cell apprehended a 42-year-old man from Ahmedabad for allegedly attempting to access and trade sensitive personal data online using cryptocurrency transactions.
The accused, identified as Vishal Gohil, was arrested in Calangute on Wednesday. An FIR has been registered under Section 66 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Gohil was attempting to procure confidential data and offer it for sale through encrypted platforms such as Telegram. Payments were to be received via cryptocurrency channels, a method often employed to obscure transaction trails.
Ongoing Investigation into Data Breach Scope and Financial Transactions
Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) Rahul Gupta stated that the investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of data accessed, trace financial transactions, and identify any co-conspirators or digital platforms involved in the crime.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the sensitive data pertained to the general public or specific individuals. The use of encrypted messaging platforms and cryptocurrency is under scrutiny, as these tools are increasingly utilized in cybercriminal activities to evade detection.
Public Urged to Report Suspicious Online Activities
In light of this incident, the Goa Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious online activities. Citizens can contact the Cyber Crime Police Station in Ribandar or call the helpline at 1930 to report cyber offences.
This arrest underscores the growing challenges law enforcement agencies face in combating cybercrime, particularly those involving sophisticated technologies like encrypted communication channels and digital currencies. The case highlights the need for increased public awareness and robust cybersecurity measures to protect personal data in the digital age.
