Fake Gadgets Flood Market: Mi India Seize Counterfeit Goods Worth Rs 33 Lakh From Chennai & Bengaluru

New Delhi: If you are a fan of popular electronic brand Mi and getting its product at a dirt-cheap price then beware! Chances are high that these products are fake.

There are multiple sellers who are offering Mi product at attractive prices on some shady websites, social media platform and even from retail outlets. But, there is a lot of possibilities that these are fake.

Popular for its affordable smartphone and TV, Mi India on Monday announced that counterfeit products of an estimated worth over Rs 33 lakhs were seized from seven supplies from southern India. Officials said four suppliers were in Chennai and three suppliers in Bengaluru.

The issue came to the notice of the brand a few months ago and through its anti-counterfeit program, a complaint was filed with the local police station. Following the complaints, raids were conducted in the market in the months of October and November.

Mi India said law enforcement agencies with company’s representatives have seized counterfeit devices from three prominent shops in the area. Over 3,000 products consisting of mobile back cases, headphones, power banks, chargers, and earphones, were found.

The shop owners from both the cities were arrested for allegedly selling fake Mi India products worth Rs 24.9 lakhs and 8.4 lakhs respectively. Upon interrogation, it was found that these suppliers have been managing this business for a long time and have sold multiple unauthorized products in the market.

Mi is not only a victim of counterfeit products, in fact, but look-a-like or replica products of all leading brands are also available in the market. It is estimated to be a multi-crore industry.

Claiming that such incidents have increased in the country over the previous year and to prevent, Mi India has created a special task force that.  “Counterfeited products not only degrade customer experience but are also a big threat to consumer health and safety, can also jeopardise privacy and data security and in some cases can also be hazardous,” said Mi in its statement.
