DEHRADUN: On August 27, 2024, the Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) cyber unit, in coordination with Dehradun Police, apprehended a suspect involved in a cyber fraud case from Surat, Gujarat. The case involves a scam where over INR 43 lakh was defrauded from a victim residing in Roorkee, Haridwar. The accused used fake advertisements on social media platforms like Instagram to lure victims with promises of high returns from stock trading and IPO investments, ultimately deceiving them into transferring large sums of money.

Modus Operandi:  The perpetrators contacted victims through social media advertisements and WhatsApp groups, offering lucrative returns on investments in stock trading and IPOs. They enticed victims by showing fake profits on a fraudulent website, https://gpc.boutique/#/pages/login/login, where victims’ personal details were collected to create fake accounts. The victims were misled into believing that they were earning significant returns. Once trust was established, the fraudsters convinced victims to invest more money under various pretenses, including false claims about IPOs and additional investment requirements. The victims’ funds were transferred to different bank accounts, and the fraudsters ultimately refused to return the invested amounts.

Arrest and seizure: The STF team successfully arrested one of the accused, Sameer Dilawar Patel, aged 20, from Shri Ram Chowk, Amroli, Surat, Gujarat, on August 23, 2024. During the arrest, the police seized a mobile phone, an SMS alert related to the fraudulent bank account, and a checkbook used in the scam.

Team Lead: The STF team under DySP Cyber Ankush Mishra involved in the operation included Sub-Inspector Ashish Gusain and others.
