Australian NRI woman seeks Telangana HC’s help to remove her nudes from social media

Hyderabad: A young NRI woman now based in Australia is knocking on all doors for help in Hyderabad, trying to get her nude images removed from social media platforms.

The incident came to light after the victim’s mother, a Madhapur resident, moved the Telangana High Court to interfere in the case. In her prayer before Justice K Lakshman, she appealed the court to free her daughter from the ordeal.

While the victim, who is married and lives in Australia with her five-year-old son, has written to Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and other social media platforms requesting to take down fake accounts created in her name and remove the nude content. She has received no response from the internet giant yet. She has also made contact with the police.

Following her mother’s request, the judge inquired about the status of the case from the Cyberabad cyber crime police station’s station house officer. The court asked about the steps taken so far to apprehend the perpetrators. The officials were given time till March 30 to respond.

The judge allowed the petitioner to file a complaint with the Union Ministry of Communications, requesting that they act in accordance with the law. The judge also served a notice to  Google, Twitter, and Facebook, requesting that they file affidavits outlining the protections in place to protect people’s privacy in such situations.

In her petition, the victim’s mother clarified that her daughter had a brief relationship with a classmate in 2011. Because the boyfriend was becoming increasingly abusive, the relationship ended after eight months. He put pressure on the girl and got her to send him nude photographs, threatening to kill herself if she didn’t. When the girl’s relationship ended, her pictures began to appear on social media platforms.

The pictures were taken down in 2012 after a complaint, but they reappeared in 2019. When the victim, now 30, confronted her ex-boyfriend, he claimed that the photographs had not been uploaded. When the victim’s husband came across the photos, he asked his wife to get the photos removed.
