Ahmedabad and Surat recorded 620 rape cases between August 1, 2025 and July 31, 2026, according to Gujarat government data presented in the state Assembly.
Ahmedabad registered 289 cases during the period, while Surat recorded 331, alongside thousands of cases involving theft, murder, kidnapping, cyber fraud and other offences.
The figures were presented in the Gujarat Assembly by Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi in response to a question by Anklav MLA Amit Chavda. The data covered theft, robbery, rape, murder, molestation, kidnapping, extortion, prohibition, gambling and cyber fraud cases in the two cities.

38,877 Accused Arrested, 725 Yet to Be Apprehended
The government said 38,877 accused had been arrested in connection with the cases covered by the data, while 725 were still to be apprehended as of July 31.
Police said information from relatives, friends and acquaintances, along with informers and technical surveillance, was being used to trace those still absconding.
In cyber fraud investigations, police were examining bank KYC details, account statements, transaction records, mobile SDR and CDR data and IP addresses. Where accused were believed to be outside Gujarat, police teams were coordinating with law enforcement agencies in other states. Look-Out Circulars had also been issued in cases where accused were believed to have fled abroad.
Crime Data Contrasts With Ahmedabad’s ‘Safest City’ Ranking
The figures come against the backdrop of Ahmedabad being named India’s safest city in the 2025 Numbeo Crime Index, with a safety score of 68.6. However, the ranking is based on crowdsourced perceptions of crime and safety rather than police-recorded crime data.
The Gujarat Assembly figures present a broader picture of registered offences in Ahmedabad and Surat. While Surat recorded more rape, murder, molestation, kidnapping and extortion cases than Ahmedabad during the period, Ahmedabad registered more theft, prohibition, gambling and cyber fraud cases.
