Aligarh. A case involving the alleged misuse of a young woman’s photograph to create a fake Instagram account and group in her name has come to light in the Delhi Gate area. According to the complaint, 242 people were added to the group created through the fake account, where obscene and objectionable photographs and videos were allegedly shared. Police have registered a case and started an investigation.
According to the woman’s complaint, she had earlier had an argument and developed differences with her maternal aunt over a family matter. She alleged that her aunt subsequently held a grudge against her. The woman further alleged that because of this dispute, her aunt Preeti conspired with her maternal cousin Kalu, a resident of village Soi in the Pahasu area of Bulandshahr, to create a fake Instagram account in her name.

The complaint states that the woman’s photograph was used on the fake profile without her permission. A group was subsequently created through the account, and 242 people were added to it. The woman alleged that objectionable material was being circulated in the group using her identity.
According to the complaint, Kalu was allegedly sending obscene photographs and videos in the group. On August 12, after learning about the activity, the woman contacted him through her genuine Instagram account and asked him to stop. However, she alleged that he continued the activity and also sent obscene photographs and videos directly to her.
The woman approached the police seeking action against those allegedly involved in creating the fake social media profile, misusing her photograph and circulating objectionable content. Based on her complaint, police have registered a case under the relevant provisions and begun an investigation.
Investigators are examining the fake Instagram account, the group created through it, the members added to the group and the digital evidence linked to the alleged circulation of objectionable material. Police are also trying to determine which device and method were used to create the fake profile and who was involved in sending the content to the group.
The role of the named individuals is also being investigated. Police said further action will be taken on the basis of digital evidence and the findings of the investigation into the social media activity.
